MODULE 2: GENERAL PADDLING SKILLS (ISSA AND SSA)

Aim      A candidate can confidently demonstrate that they can handle, prepare and control their kayak in small to moderate sea and wind conditions.

Perform general Stroke skills

 

For each stroke there should be correct hand placement on the paddle; sufficient wrist movement for correct blade placement; adequate paddle depth in water to achieve effective stroke; correct blade angle throughout the stroke and correct paddle entry & exit points with respect to craft & body position.

Forward and reverse paddle; forward and reverse sweeps; draw strokes; stern rudder; bow rudder; stopping; and support brace.

Perform bow rudder When moving forward position the blade as you would in a draw stroke but well forward and at a slight angle to pull the bow over.

 

SEA SKILLS

Use edging For appropriate strokes, the kayak needs to be edged without the use of a rudder.
